From my childhood in Minnesota to Himalayan expeditions to making feature films, I’ve been blessed at every turn with extraordinary mentors — people I’ve gone back to again and again for wisdom and advice on what it means to live a meaningful life. This book is about sharing with you the result of those long conversations.

Rules to Live By is my way of going back to the people who have always inspired me: Lynsey Addario, Annette Bening, Simone Biles, Yvon Chouinard, Alex Honnold, Bill King, Yo-Yo Ma, Ridley Scott, Kelly Slater, and Kristine Tompkins. It’s about looking yet again, to the mentors I trust, for insights on cultivating and sustaining a life full of what really matters.
